Trending: December 2011

Scam Type: Malware

Why it’s a Scam:

The link on the Facebook post is made to look like an image file. The scammers do this by ending the scam link with “img”. Unsuspecting users who happen to click the link better hope their anti-virus software is working and up to date. Clicking the link leads to a malicious website, and the following alert was immediately displayed:

* This scam is using multiple domains, and all of them end with ‘img’.

If you are caught unaware and unprotected, then you are likely to be infected with the HEUR: Trojan virus shown above.

How to Deal with the Scam:

If you follow the scam through to its completion, then you are likely spreading the very same scam message to your friends. They will need to remove the scam message by clicking the small “X” located in the top right hand corner of the post on their wall. You also need to run a complete system scan on your machine to make sure the code didn’t infect your system. Also change your Facebook password and check to see if you have any rogue Facebook applications installed.
