Facebook Changes Stance On Controversial “Baby Yoga” Video, Decides To Censor It

facebook_censorA video emerged on Facebook last week showing an adult repeatedly dunking a crying baby into a bucket of water. The video, thought to originate in Indonesia, went viral and sparked outrage around the world, especially in the United Kingdom. However, Facebook said that the video depicted “baby yoga” and didn’t violate its Community Standards.  But after the outcry over the photo continued, Facebook reversed its stance and will now pull the video “in cases where it promotes or mocks the behavior.”

According to Simon Milner, Director of Policy at Facebook UK, posts with the video that condemn the behavior will be stamped with a warning and will only be visible to users over 18. However, some advocates, including the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK, feel that Facebook needs to step up and take responsibility for content on the site.

“The NSPCC believes we have now reached the long overdue point where it is time for social networking sites to be held to account for the content on their sites and pay more attention to their safeguarding duties to protect children and young people, whether they are viewing the content or appearing in it,” said Peter Wanless, chief executive of the group.

Readers: do you think Facebook should have the right to censor content like this? Should it be able to judge if a piece of content serves the public good?
