Facebook Has Won Nearly $2 Billion From Spammers in Court

no spam allow illustration designFacebook understandably receives a lot of bad press for its privacy policies and what it does with user data. However, there’s no denying the site has stepped up its efforts to rid Facebook of spammy content. According to Matt Jones, Facebook’s site integrity engineer, the company has won massive legal victories in court against these cybercriminals.

“We have obtained nearly $2 billion in legal judgments against spammers, and we utilize these channels when possible to remind would-be offenders that we will fight back to prevent abuse on our platform,” he wrote in a blog post.

Jones also laid out the company’s strategy for fighting fake likes, including a combination of automatic and manual detection systems, handing over spam-fighting technology to academic institutions and limiting likes per account.

October, which is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, was the impetus behind Jones’ post, which is no doubt intended to serve as a reminder to concerned users that, yes, Facebook actually has their best interests in mind. But even though it’s a bit self-congratulatory, the fact that Facebook has won such a significant amount of money in court against spammers is beneficial to users in the end. Of course, it’s more beneficial to the businesses and advertisers that Facebook wants to keep happy, but the less malicious content on Facebook, the better the experience will be for everyone.
