Facebook Working to Protect Drunk Users From Themselves

Danger Social networkUsers who take pictures and post them directly to Facebook during a night of drunken revelry is an unfortunate and common occurrence on social media. However, experts at Facebook want to make it an avoidable one with  an artificial intelligence program that would warn users before they posted pics they might regret. Yann LeCun, who oversees the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research Lab, told Wired that he envisions the tool being able to tell the difference between your drunk and sober face in photos.

As he explained to Wired, the program would essentially warn users by saying: “Uh, this is being posted publicly. Are you sure you want your boss and your mother to see this?”

Not only does LeCun think this program could help users mediate their interactions, but it could also help them stay secure; he’s also working on a program that would notify users whenever someone they didn’t know posted their photo to Facebook without the user’s approval.

Of course, the idea of Facebook being able to analyze your photos to the level of determining whether or not you’re sober is creepy. But the technology isn’t as far away as it may seem; Facebook’s facial recognition technology is already among the most advanced in the world. In other words, it’s only a matter of time before Facebook takes their tech to the next level of user observation.
