Facebook phony uses identity of fallen soldier to seduce women

roberto_sanchezThe New York Post reports that someone using the fake name “Dylan Sorvino” is using photos of Sgt. Roberto Sanchez to meet women online. Sanchez is a 24-year-old Army Ranger killed in Afghanistan in 2009 while completing his 5th tour of service.

Sorvino uploaded pictures of Sanchez to his Facebook profile, and then pretended to be a war hero from New York still serving in the military. He also pretended to be a former law student before joining the Army to fight for his country. He would invite women to be his Facebook friend and then engage them with tales of his military accomplishments. He would romance the women for months, tell them of his plans to return home and then never show up for a face to face meeting.

Sorvino was busted when a woman familiar with his Facebook profile happened to see photos of Sanchez while browsing a military website.

Needless to say, Sanchez’s family is very upset over the incident. His mother, Wendy Holland, stated “My son died for this country. How can anyone do that? It’s so heartless.”

Sanchez’s military comrades confronted Sorvino on Thursday, and Sorvino then deleted his Facebook account.

Sorvino may be in violation of the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 which makes it illegal to falsely claim military awards or wear military regalia. The FBI has been contacted by some of Sanchez’s comrades, but the FBI may not investigate since no financial loss has occurred.

Sorvino also posted photos of Sanchez on MySpace and Bebo.com
