Over the past year, US states have banded together to bring legal action against Facebook for allegedly causing harm to young users. Now, another coalition of attorneys general have blasted the social media giant in an open letter calling for “immediate action” to help Facebook users who have had their accounts hacked.
According to the group of 41 state attorneys, complaints are skyrocketing across the country from users who say their Facebook and Instagram accounts have been stolen. The attorneys say this is a massive drain on government, which must act as Facebook’s “customer service representatives” to help victims of fraud. That’s why they’re strongly calling on the company to properly invest in “response and mitigation” for hacking threats.
“Having your social media account taken over by a scammer can feel like having someone sneak into your home and change all of the locks,” New York attorney general Letitia James said in a statement. “Social media is how millions of Americans connect with family, friends, and people throughout their communities and the world. To have Meta fail to properly protect users from scammers trying to hijack accounts and lock rightful owners out is unacceptable.”
It’s notable that the attorneys general stopped short of bringing a legal challenge against Facebook. However, if the company doesn’t properly respond, that could be the next step to hold it accountable.
