Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,000-word essay last week detailing what he sees as the future of Facebook. Zuck’s screed touched on many topics, including how he thinks Facebook can help alleviate poverty, promote peace and understanding, and even spread freedom. However, lost in all the lofty ideas was a pretty radical idea to reinvent how Facebook lets users deal with controversial content.

Instead of the site’s uniform Community Standards, Facebook wants to introduce a new Artificial Intelligence-regulated system that would essentially create custom standards for every user based on their answers to a series of questions.

“The idea is to give everyone in the community options for how they would like to set the content policy for themselves,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Where is your line on nudity? On violence? On graphic content? On profanity? What you decide will be your personal settings.”

The problem with this, besides the unreliability of Facebook’s AI, is that users would need to give the site even more of their personal data — and it would be information about some pretty sensitive subjects, to boot. Facebook already knows a ton about you, and if they are able to improve their technology to the point Zuckerberg is talking about, you can bet they’re going to find out even more.
