Mark Zuckerberg’s Sister Not Happy that a Private Photo Goes Public

randi_zuckerbergRandi Zuckerberg, Mark Zuckerberg’s sister and former director of marketing at Facebook, posted a photo of her and her family (including Mark) reacting humorously to the site’s new Poke app. Vox Media marketing director Callie Schweitzer saw the picture on Facebook and sent it out to her nearly 40,000 Twitter followers. Randi Zuckerberg was none too happy about this, tweeting at Schweitzer: “Not sure where you got this photo. I posted it only to friends on FB. You reposting it on Twitter is way uncool.”

Schweitzer, however, was Facebook friends with another member of the Zuckerberg clan, and likely saw the picture because her friend was tagged in the photo. Schweitzer apologized profusely to Zuckerberg, tweeting that “I would hate for a private photo of mine to be public and would never want to do the same to others. [For what it’s worth], I thought the photo was incredibly endearing which is why I liked it. We never see humans on the Internet!”

This privacy incident came at a rather ironic time for Facebook’s first family, as the site is rolling out new privacy features that include an easier-to-navigate system that will inform users who can see their content and how they can better control it.

Remember, even though you might have a photo set to be shared with friends only, if you decide to tag a friend in the picture then that person’s friends can see the picture too. It’s a little-known rule in Facebook’s privacy settings; heck, even Mark Zuckerberg’s sister didn’t know about it.
