Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services suspends policy requiring employee Facebook login credentials

binary_data_lock100pxAs a follow up to our story yesterday on the Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services’ policy of requiring applicants to provide their Facebook login credentials, that practice is now suspended pending a 45 day review.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Robert Collins had taken a leave of absence following the passing of his mother. Upon his return he was advised that he would have to provide his Facebook login email and password as a condition of his reinstatement.

No doubt the huge public outcry over the issue, and mounting pressure from the Maryland chapter of the ACLU played a monumental role in the department reversing its stance.

Deborah Jeon, the Legal Director for the ACLU stated, “It is equivalent to a demand that officers permit the government to listen in on their personal telephone calls as a condition of employment.”

We will keep a watch and the story and issue updates as they become available.
