For months, Facebook has touted its Oversight Board as a solution to tough content moderation and censorship decisions. The independent organization, which has yet to launch, will function as a “Supreme Court” for the social media giant, policing the platform and taking some valuable power from the company. However, some activists and experts aren’t happy with how long it has taken to launch the group, and many are worried it won’t be active enough by the U.S. election to prevent the spread of misinformation. That’s why a group of 25 experts and advocates recently took matters into their own hands, forming their own “Real Facebook Oversight Board.”
“This is an emergency response,” Real Oversight Board member and journalist Carole Cadwalladr said. “We know there are going to be a series of incidents leading up to the election and beyond in which Facebook is crucial. This is a real-time response from an authoritative group of experts to counter the spin Facebook is putting out.”
The new group will hold its first meeting on October 1 via Zoom, and while none of its findings will be binding for Facebook, its members hope to push to company’s policies in the right direction. Time will tell if this strategy is effective, but at least somebody is focused on holding Facebook to account right now.
