Arkansas Announces Lawsuit Against Facebook For Harming Young Users

Facebook has increasingly dealt with pressure from lawmakers over the harm it may cause young users, and that fight escalated in a big way this week when the state of Arkansas filed a lawsuit against the social media giant for deceiving users.

The suit, which was also filed against TikTok, alleges that the social media companies are manipulating children to get them addicted to their platforms. The state also accused Facebook of “creating a public nuisance and unjustly enriching themselves at the expense of the State and its citizens.”

“We have to hold Big Tech companies accountable for pushing addictive platforms on our kids and exposing them to a world of inappropriate, damaging content,” Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. “This lawsuit against Meta will be the first of its kind by any state anywhere in the country. They will pay for the damage that they are doing to our kids.”

It’s a popular cause on both sides of the political aisle right now to pick a fight with big tech, and this lawsuit is no exception. However, it may turn out to be more than a stunt, and in that case, Facebook could have to provide some real answers about how it treats young users.
