Colorado Passes Law To Stop Facebook From Reading Your Thoughts

Facebook has built one of the largest businesses on the world on one simple fact: it owns more of our personal data than just about anyone else. However, that doesn’t stop the social media giant from always wanting more — including even our own thoughts. Facebook and other tech giants like Apple are already exploring neurotechnology, or tech that can read and react to users’ brainwaves. That’s why some forward-thinking lawmakers and advocates are pushing for legislation that will protect the privacy of your thoughts from the prying eyes of Facebook and other companies like it. And a few weeks ago, Colorado became the first US state to legally protect the privacy of this neural data.

According to a report from the privacy advocacy group Neurorights Foundation, some consumer neurotech companies are already collecting user data and could even be selling it. That makes it more important than ever for laws like Colorado’s to come into effect.

“If you’re worried about what might happen with your neural data and mental privacy, you need to be worried right now about that,” Jared Genser, general counsel at Neurorights Foundation, told Vox. “Because people are buying these devices all around the world.”

It’s disheartening that we need to be worried about Facebook invading our very brains, but the company has demonstrated time and time again that it will stop at nothing to collect our private information.
