Deadly Baby Product Still Widely Sold On Facebook

This week, federal regulators at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) heavily criticized Facebook for not doing enough to stop the sale of a baby product that has been linked to 10 infant deaths. Even though the product was recalled in 2021, the CPSC says that it is still widely available to purchase on Facebook Marketplace.

“These sales are illegal; it is against the law to sell recalled consumer products, whether new or used,” the agency wrote in a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “Far too often, the CPSC has found [recalled] products listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace even after recall information has been provided to your company. We call on you to identify recalled and violative products and to prevent their listing by your users. By allowing such products to be posted, you are putting Facebook Marketplace users at risk.”

The regulators went on to blast Facebook even more directly, saying that it has “not taken effective action” to address this problem and that it “can and should be doing much more to save lives.” For its part, Facebook said that it takes this issue seriously and removes these posts when it finds them. However, when it comes to the safety of babies, the company might have to do better than that.
