Facebook Bombarded With Negative Reviews Over Censorship Allegations

Over the past week, Facebook has been bombarded with negative reviews of its app. However, these aren’t just any reviews. Instead, it is the result of a coordinated campaign to protest the social media giant’s alleged censorship of pro-Palestinian accounts and posts.

Internally, Facebook is taking the issue very seriously, categorizing it as a SEV1 — the second-highest priority that the site assigns to issues. Some Facebook employees have expressed concern that not only have these users lost trust in the platform, but they could cause further distrust in Facebook, too.

“User trust is dropping considerably with the recent escalations between Israel and Palestine,” one Facebook senior software engineer wrote on Facebook’s internal message board. “Our users are upset with our handling of the situation. Users are feeling that they are being censored, getting limited distribution, and ultimately silenced. As a result, our users have started protesting by leaving 1-star reviews.”

Additionally, Facebook’s ongoing privacy feud with Apple has already come back to haunt it in a big way. Facebook asked its rival to remove these negative reviews, but Apple refused, leaving Facebook hung out to dry with no clear recourse. This story is far from over, but for now, it seems as though Facebook will have to swallow its medicine and accept this wave of negative press.
