Facebook Demands NYU Researchers Stop Using The Company’s Data

Researchers at New York University have developed a tool that that allows them to collect user data and see what political ads are being served up on the platform. However, Facebook has demanded that the university experts halt their project, sending a letter on October 16 asking the academics to stop gathering information.

According to researchers, the tool is a valuable public service because it presents information “otherwise unavailable to the public” about who is trying to influence them on the platform.

Facebook’s collection of user data allows advertisers “to profile citizens and send them misinformation about candidates and policies that are designed to influence or even suppress their vote,” NYU professor Damon McCoy told CNN. “Shutting down a key data source for studying election interference and manipulation — in November, of all months — impedes our efforts to safeguard the democratic process.”

Of course, it’s pretty rich for Facebook to demand anyone stop gathering data from their users — especially when it’s being done for the public good. The reality is that Facebook alone wants control of our information, and anyone who infringes on that — including reputable institutions like NYU — will face consequences from the company.
