Facebook Has Repeatedly “Interfered” With US Elections Since 2008

For years, Facebook has been criticized for not doing enough to stop bad actors from using its platforms to influence elections. However, a new study released this week from the conservative nonprofit Media Research Center claims that the social media giant itself has interfered with US elections at least 39 times since 2008.

According to the group, Facebook has repeatedly censored Republican politicians while also throttling political advertising one week before the 2020 presidential election.

“Zuckerberg and his company have a complicated relationship with free speech. The Meta CEO has repeatedly made decisive statements in support of freedom of speech that have condemned fact checking, Big Tech election interference and political censorship, and yet his platform participates in all three,” two of the study authors wrote.

In 2024, Facebook has already significantly deprioritized all political content and advertising in an effort to stay out of the fray ahead of the upcoming presidential election. However, that likely won’t protect the company from these kinds of accusations from both sides of the aisle anyway. Because Facebook has so much power to control what users see, it’s virtually impossible for it to avoid angering a large swath of people.
