Facebook Introduces New Tool To Crack Down On Spread Of Teens’ Intimate Images

This week, Facebook introduced an ambitious new tool intended to crack down on “revenge porn,” or the spread of explicit pictures without the victim’s consent. Unfortunately, this practice is common on social media, especially among teen boys.

The tool, called Take It Down, was created in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It will allow minors who are the victims of revenge porn to attach a digital fingerprint to explicit images from their own devices without having to upload them to another platform. Then, if the images are reshared on any Meta platform, they will be flagged and removed.

“This issue has been incredibly important to Meta for a very, very long time because the damage done is quite severe in the context of teens or adults,” Meta global safety director Antigone Davis told CNN. “It can do damage to their reputation and familial relationships, and puts them in a very vulnerable position. It’s important that we find tools like this to help them regain control of what can be a very difficult and devastating situation.”

While many teens now use platforms other than Facebook and Instagram, this tool could still go a long way toward fighting this horrendous privacy problem.
