Facebook Introduces Paid Verification Subscription Service With Added Security

It’s safe to say that Facebook has a spotty reputation for protecting its users. However, the social media giant announced this week that it’s preparing to roll out extra security features that any user can access — for a price. According to founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company is introducing a paid verification feature that costs $11.99 per month on web and $14.99 per month on mobile.

“This week we’re starting to roll out Meta Verified — a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support,” Zuckerberg wrote on Instagram. “This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services.”

This feature, which is similar to one introduced recently by Twitter, aims to both strengthen user security and signal that an account is legit. It also addresses many common complaints about the company’s policies, namely how difficult it is to reach real human help when an account is hacked. However, putting these kinds of basic features behind a paywall is sure to cause even more controversy for the already-embattled company.
