Facebook Is Giving Users More Control Over Spam In Their Feeds

If you’ve used Facebook for any amount of time, you know that spam is an unfortunately common occurrence. In response, the company works to automatically hide these posts. However, not everyone wants the social media giant telling them what they can and can’t see. That’s why the company announced a major change to its content moderation practices this week, giving users more control over the content that populates their feeds.

As it currently stands, Facebook automatically demotes “low quality” content like clickbait, spam, or graphic and violent posts. However, users will now be able to increase the amount of this content they see if they so choose. Users will also be able to decide if they want to see more or less content that has been fact-checked by one of Facebook’s third-party partners.

“We’re giving people on Facebook even more power to control the algorithm that ranks posts in their Feed. We’re doing this in response to users telling us that they want a greater ability to decide what they see on our apps,” Facebook said in a statement. “This builds on work that we’ve been doing for a long time in this area and will help to make user controls on Facebook more consistent with the ones that already exist on Instagram.”

While it seems questionable to give people the ability to see more spam, it’s at least encouraging that the company is willing to put more power in the hands of its users to control their experience.
