Facebook Is Grilled About The Role Of Weapons Ads In Jan. 6 Riot

This week, 23 lawmakers sent a letter to Facebook demanding to know how the company is handling weapons-related advertisements on its platform following the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. After that event, Facebook temporarily suspended these ads. However, as the lawmakers pointed out, many users still received ads for these products even after the policy took effect.

Additionally, the group of politicians wants advertisers to be made aware if their ads appear next to violent or false content.

“Facebook should inform advertisers… and make the necessary changes to guarantee that Facebook and companies’ ad dollars are not further supporting or sowing seeds of hate and distrust throughout the country,” the lawmakers wrote.

The letter also went on to say that Facebook “has a moral obligation to take action regarding ads that stoke aggression. We also believe Facebook has a moral responsibility to provide transparency and tools to advertisers so they can avoid supporting purveyors of misinformation and disinformation, and promoters of violence.”

Of course, Facebook has faced similar calls before, and it doesn’t always result in action. Still, it’s encouraging that politicians are increasingly aware of the social media giant’s problems.
