Facebook Launches Plan To Get 50 Million People Vaccinated Despite Misinformation Criticism

This week, Facebook announced an ambitious plan to get 50 million people vaccinated by offering a tool to help them find and make appointments. The company also said it will step up its efforts to fight misinformation and amplify credible sources such as the World Health Organization. However, some experts and advocates believe that these moves are too little, too late — especially since Facebook played such a large role in allowing these problems to grow in the first place.

“Since Facebook’s last announcement of their intention to ‘crack down’ on anti-vaccine misinformation over a month ago, almost no progress has been made,” digital advocacy leader Imran Ahmed told Recode. “Facebook and Instagram still do not remove the vast majority of posts reported to them for containing dangerous misinformation about vaccines. The main superspreaders of anti-vaccine lies all still have a presence on Instagram or Facebook, despite promises to remove them.”

The social media giant’s efforts to get people vaccinated should be applauded. However, until it gets a handle on stopping dangerous information related to the pandemic, these features won’t balance out the damage done by bad actors abusing Facebook’s platform.
