Facebook Overhauls Confusing Censorship Policy For AI Videos

When it comes to content moderation, Facebook’s rules are often all over the place. That’s why the company’s semi-independent Oversight Board recently blasted the social media giant for its “incoherent” policy related to AI-generated videos. And this week, Facebook agreed to some of the Board’s recommendations, announcing that it will begin “labeling a wider range of video, audio, and image content as ‘Made with AI.’”

Previously, the company would only label or remove videos that appeared to show someone saying something they didn’t say. However, that woefully inadequate policy left a gaping loophole that bad actors could exploit.

“We agree with the Oversight Board’s argument that our existing approach is too narrow since it only covers videos that are created or altered by AI to make a person appear to say something they didn’t say,” Facebook vice president of content policy Monika Bickert wrote in a blog. “As the Board noted, it’s equally important to address manipulation that shows a person doing something they didn’t do.”

Notably, the Board also got Facebook to agree that removing AI videos that don’t explicitly violate its community standards could “unnecessarily risk restricting freedom of expression.” In other words, Facebook’s overall censorship policies have taken a big step forward thanks to the Oversight Board’s ruling.
