Facebook Oversight Board Gives Itself The Power To Put Warning Labels On Content

When Facebook created its independent Oversight Board, the company wanted an organization to help solve its trickiest content moderation issues. However, the group has since expanded its power, including with a dramatic announcement this week that it will soon be able to add warning labels to content on Facebook and Instagram

The Board, which already has the authority to review user appeals to remove content, can make binding decisions on these issues that Facebook must accept whether it agrees or not.

“Expanding the Board’s scope is also central to increasing our impact,” the Board wrote on its website. “Having previously gained the ability to review user appeals to remove content, starting this month the Board will be able to make binding decisions to apply a warning screen when leaving up or restoring qualifying content, including to photo and video content. Warning screen types include marking content as ‘disturbing’ or ‘sensitive.’”

It’s certainly a good thing that Facebook has given the Board this much power to protect users and enforce its rules. However, hopefully the group provides more details about how and when it will apply these warning labels. If they don’t provide that level of transparency, then they’re no better than the company they’re tasked with keeping in check.
