Facebook Privacy Tool Offers An Eye-Opening Glimpse Into What The Company Knows About Us

When Facebook introduced its “Off-Facebook Activity” tool, it promised more transparency for users who didn’t know what the company was doing with their personal data. However, it may have shown some users more than it bargained for. Digital Trends reporter Shubham Agarwal was so disturbed by what he saw in his Off-Facebook Activity report that he decided to nuke his account altogether.

The Off-Facebook Activity tool works by pulling a list of all the apps and websites that have tracked you and shared your information with the social media giant — in other words, how the company makes its money.

“Think of Facebook as a modern, advanced Rolodex hosting sophisticated profiles of billions of people,” Agarwal wrote. “Each profile features hordes of intricate personal details about your behavior such as your interests, what do you like to shop, when do you shop, what devices do you own, and more.”

“But Facebook isn’t the only one responsible for maintaining this database,” Agarwal continued. “The social network’s trackers are engineered into hundreds of thousands of apps and websites. They all collect data and add to this digital profile of you.”

After seeing all this information gathered in one place, Agarwal decided it was best just to delete his profile. If everybody ran their own report, it’s a safe bet that many more users would feel the same way.
