Facebook Wants To Train AI By Showing It User Videos

In recent years, Facebook has become obsessed with the possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI). The social media giant believes AI holds the key to tackling issues on the platform ranging from content moderation to better connecting friends. However, in order for this technology to properly work, it first must be trained. And to be trained, it needs access to tons of user data. Facebook is already training its AI to read images by showing it users’ Instagram feeds — and this week, the company announced that it wants to share our videos with its AI system, too.

“By learning from global streams of publicly available videos spanning nearly every country and hundreds of languages, our AI systems will not just improve accuracy but also adapt to our fast-moving world and recognize the nuances and visual cues across different cultures and regions,” Facebook wrote in a blog post announcing the initiative.

Of course, this announcement is already raising privacy concerns. But the company’s only response was to note that its Data Policy allows for users’ uploaded content to be used for “product research and development.” In other words, our data is fair game — and Facebook isn’t likely to back down from this plan.
