Facebook Wrestles With Decision To Share User Data With Law Enforcement Following Roe V. Wade Decision

Following last week’s monumental Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, many privacy advocates have pressed Facebook to share whether it will help in abortion prosecutions by sharing user data with police. And so far, Facebook hasn’t provided an answer.

Of course, experts and users alike have long been concerned about the amount of data that the social media giant gathers on its users, especially sensitive medical information. However, this is the first time that this data could potentially be used against people in a criminal proceeding. That’s why, according to reports, many employees at Facebook are also urging the company to take action and protect users. However, all Facebook has provided so far is a weak defense of its data sharing agreement with law enforcement.

“We carefully scrutinize all government requests for user information and often push back, including in court,” Facebook spokesman Andy Stone told The Washington Post. “We only respond to legal requests for information in accordance with applicable law and our terms and we provide notice to users whenever permitted.”

It’s clear that Facebook doesn’t want to take a stance on this issue. However, what is sure to be an overwhelming amount of outside pressure may force the company’s hand sooner rather than later.
