Facebook’s Own Oversight Board Says It Needs To Be Much More Transparent

In its first-ever annual report, Facebook’s independent Oversight Board has called on the company to be far more transparent with the public about how it handles its policies and content moderation issues.

According to the group, Facebook has made some progress implementing its recommendations, but the company needs to share more information about its content removal rules. Specifically, the Board said that Facebook needs to be clearer about its “strike system” that allows users to break the rules an unspecified number of times before they’re punished.

“The Board is encouraged by first-year trends in its engagement with Meta, but the company must urgently improve its transparency,” the group wrote in its report. “The Board continues to have significant concerns, including around Meta’s transparency and provision of information related to certain cases and policy recommendations.”

Despite being an “independent” organization, the Board is reliant on Facebook for information, funding, and power. That’s why so many critics have questioned whether it can ever have a meaningful impact on how the social media giant does business. However, the more that the group publicly raises these concerns, the more likely it becomes that Facebook will have to eventually act.
