Hackers are always searching for ways to compromise users’ Facebook accounts, and it seems like they’ve found an alarming new shortcut. According to multiple reports this week, a Vietnamese hacking ring has figured out how to create fake Oculus VR profiles and link them to real Facebook accounts.

While this account linking is easily accomplished for hackers, the email IDs of the hacker and user don’t match up and the access is flagged unauthorized. That has led to hundreds of users having their accounts suspended without knowing why, and with few tools at their disposal to regain access. As usual, the victims of this attack are blasting Facebook for being unresponsive to their complaints.

“The lack of official response from Facebook and Meta is causing further distress and frustration among victims, who are left without access to their accounts and no clear path to regain control,” said Dan Astin-Gregory, a content creator whose Facebook account was suspended. “We urge @facebook and @meta to acknowledge this critical security breach and take immediate action to protect their users. This includes implementing appropriate safeguards to prevent unauthorized account linking and providing a clear communication and support channel for affected individuals.”

Facebook is notorious for having little to no human customer service, making it next to impossible for hacking victims to reach the company. Hopefully the victims of this latest scam manage to regain access to their accounts, but if history is any indication, it could be a slow and painful process.
