Hackers Reportedly Selling Access To Facebook’s Police Portal

For years, Facebook has reportedly had a cozy relationship with law enforcement, giving multiple government agencies a special portal that lets them request user data or ask the social media giant to remove posts and ban accounts. This has been wildly controversial with privacy advocates, who believe the company should be doing more to protect its users. However, Facebook may have an even bigger problem on its hands. According to a cybersecurity researcher, a hacker is selling access to Facebook and Instagram’s police portal.

According to the researcher, Facebook was itself probably the victim of a hack, with attackers tricking an employee into providing access to the portal. Alternately, hackers may have targeted a member of the law enforcement community.

“I believe it is likely that Meta was social engineered into providing access to the threat actor using their official form,” researcher Alon Gal told Security Affairs. “Alternatively, credentials of a law enforcement official may have been obtained by threat actors, which provided them access to the portal.”

Of course, this is only a problem because Facebook created this controversial portal in the first place. This is an unbelievably dangerous thing to fall into the hands of hackers, so perhaps the company should’ve thought twice before implementing it.
