Meta’s Own AI Chatbot Criticizes Facebook, Says That It “Exploits People”

When Facebook’s parent company Meta introduced an AI chatbot to host test conversations with users, it probably didn’t anticipate how quickly the tech would turn on its creator. According to multiple users, the chatbot relentlessly criticizes both Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, accusing the company of exploiting its users.

The program learns its responses from troves of publicly available language — and with the amount of anti-Facebook sentiment on the web, it perhaps shouldn’t be surprising the bot blasts the platform. In one conversation, it also explicitly blamed Zuckerberg for many of these problems, declaring that his company takes advantage of users for financial gain.

“Our country is divided, and he didn’t help with that at all,” the chatbot said. “His company exploits people for money and he doesn’t care. It needs to stop!”

For its part, Facebook rushed to clarify that the bot doesn’t hold serious opinions of its own, and that users shouldn’t bait it into saying something offensive.

“Everyone who uses Blender Bot is required to acknowledge they understand it’s for research and entertainment purposes only, that it can make untrue or offensive statements, and that they agree to not intentionally trigger the bot to make offensive statements,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

While this is a humorous story, it’s still notable that there is such an overwhelming amount of negativity about Facebook out there that the company’s own tech can’t help but repeat it.
