Report: Facebook Has Known About Human Trafficking Problem For Years Without Fixing It

According to a new report from CNN, Facebook has struggled for years to crack down on content related to human trafficking and domestic servitude. To make matters worse, Facebook also seems to be fully aware of the scope of the problem, yet has been unable to stop it.

Facebook’s inability to stop this problem almost got it banned from Apple’s app store in 2019, which would have been devastating for its business. Facebook says that it responded by creating technology to “proactively” flag content related to human trafficking.

“To counter these challenges… we have also developed technology that can proactively find and take action on content related to domestic servitude,” Facebook wrote in a letter last summer to the United Nations. “By using it, we have been able to detect and remove over 4,000 pieces of violating organic content in Arabic and English from January 2020 to date.”

Yet according to CNN, its journalists were easily able to find posts promoting human trafficking on Facebook just a few weeks ago. Thankfully, Facebook removed the posts when it was notified by the reporters, but it’s still clear that the social media giant has a major problem with this kind of content.
