Report: Facebook Lets People Look You Up Using Your Security Phone Number

Facebook is often rightly criticized for the lack of security it provides for users. However, the company has long encouraged people to sign up for two-factor authentication as a means of better protecting themselves. And while this is normally an effective security measure, Facebook has already been caught misusing the phone numbers that users entrusted to it to sign up for the service.

Last year, Facebook apologized for using these phone numbers to target advertising. And now, the company is in hot water again after a report in TechCrunch brought attention to the fact that anyone can look you up using your security number. The worst part is that Facebook won’t allow you to opt out of this privacy-violating feature — even though you never opted in to it in the first place.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way for you to wrest some semblance of control back from Facebook. Simply go to your account’s settings, click Privacy, then “How People Find and Contact You.” From there, click “Who can look you up using the phone number you provided?”, and change it from “Everyone” to “Friends.” But of course, the sad fact is that as long as you’re using Facebook, you can never entirely secure your info.
