Report: Facebook Wants To Target Children As Young As Six Years Old

Facebook continued to deal with the fallout from a series of leaked internal documents this week as a host of internal document were released en masse to the press. There were many damning revelations in the material, including that the company is actively seeking to target children as young as six years old.

Much of this damaging internal content has been released piecemeal over the past several weeks by a whistleblower, including reports that the social media giant was trying to hook young users. However, it was not previously known just how young the users were who Facebook hoped to target. This report has obviously raised a host of concerns with lawmakers and advocates, who worry that the company is harmful to young users and also can’t protect their privacy.

“These documents make clear that instead of working to make its existing platforms less harmful to teens, Facebook’s priority was to ensnare younger children and create a pipeline of lifetime users of Facebook products,” nonprofit executive director Josh Golin told NBC News. “It’s clear the real reason is Facebook is fixated on kids to drive growth. Facebook products aren’t safe for younger children, and a company that consistently puts profits ahead of young people’s well-being has no business building platforms for kids.”

There have been so many incendiary reports about Facebook in recent weeks that it’s unclear if this one will cause any long-term impact. However, when children are involved, Facebook is almost certain to face increased scrutiny.
