Report: It Can Take Years To Recover A Hacked Facebook Account

No matter how much Facebook improves its security measures, hackers will always be a threat to users on the platform. However, how the company helps these users who have fallen victim to bad actors could apparently use a lot of improvement. According to a recent report in The Washington Post, it can take years for some hacked users to recover their accounts, leading to lost time, money, and peace of mind.

Despite being the largest social media platform in the world, Facebook has never had a real customer service department, making it extremely difficult for hacked users to get in touch with a real employee at the company. And according to the nonprofit group Identity Threat Resource Center, reports of hacked social media accounts have increased 159 percent from 2021 to 2022. In other words, Facebook is failing to help hacking victims at a time when these bad actors are on the rise. In response to these claims, Facebook offered only a mild reply, saying it is “making progress” in these areas.

“Over the past year, we have made significant progress in raising awareness of common threats across the internet that may lead to compromised accounts, improving our account recovery flows to support people that are locked out, and in helping them regain access to their account,” Meta spokeswoman Gabby Curtis told The Washington Post.

No matter what the company says, it’s clear that it has never prioritized customer service. And with more layoffs around the corner, this already weak aspect of the company could get even worse. As a precaution, we highly recommend setting up two-factor authentication to better secure your Facebook account.
