School District Sues Facebook For Allegedly Harming Children’s Mental Health

This year, many school districts around the country have launched legal action against Facebook and other social media companies for allegedly harming the mental health of students. And this week, a school district in Charlotte, North Carolina, threw its hat into the ring, suing Facebook with the ultimate goal of changing its very business practices.

According to the district, Facebook’s “addictive” products have led schools to dedicate more resources to issues like depression and anxiety. While the district is seeking funds to help counter this problem, it also wants to “initiate a transformation” of the entire platform to make it safer for young users.

“Social media companies intentionally design their platforms to get young users addicted to their services and exploit their developing minds for profit,” said Phil Federico, an attorney representing the school district. “We plan to compel social media companies to fully address the harms caused by their platforms and compensate school districts for the resources they’ve been forced to utilize to try and mitigate this youth mental health crisis.”

While one school district won’t make or break Facebook, there has been enough of a groundswell around the country that the social media giant may soon have to address this problem head on.
