U.S. Lawmakers Could Finally Take Action Against Facebook In 2022

Lawmakers have long promised to rein in Facebook’s control over our online lives. However, 2022 could be the year that it actually happens. There are currently around a dozen bills being considered that could curb the company’s power, including changing its algorithms and how it collects user data. Meanwhile, multiple state attorneys general are investigating how the social media giant potentially harms young users, while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ruled last week that a lawsuit aiming to break up the company can move forward.

Of course, politicians haven’t always been so willing to get into the nitty-gritty of what to do about the company’s power. But increasingly, experts say, they are proposing concrete solutions that are becoming more and more feasible by the day.

“You’re seeing a lot less of the politicized commentary and a lot more focus and coordination on these issues, the underlying technology behind them and the business model,” Katie Paul of the tech advocacy group Tech Transparency Project told CNN. “It’s clear that a lot of these members of Congress have done their homework and they understand what they’re looking at.”

Of course, politicians are inevitably going to disagree about the best way to handle Facebook’s many issues. But at least they’re in agreement that something needs to be done.
