Hoax: Philippines Cited as Source of Porn Attack

hoax_alertRecently, Facebook announced that they knew who the culprits behind the Porn and Gore attack. The social networking giant promised legal retribution and an assurance to the general public that they have things under control. Facebook did not go into any specifics about who the culprits were at that time.

Then, mere days after the announcement came another supposed announcement from Mark Zuckerberg himself. According to the message, the attacks had originated from the Philippines. Zuckerberg allegedly warned that if the Filipinos did not stop the attack, then he would be forced to ban the entire country from Facebook.

The message reads as follows:

The porn attacks originated in the Philippines and are being published by Filipinos all over Facebook, our experts here at Facebook are doing everything they can to stop it from spreading any further (outside the Philippines) and to eliminate the porn and spam threat completely which have been causing other Facebook users ‘a hard time’. Filipinos should also be vigilant and report any spam links and pornographic materials. 41% of Facebook members around the world are aged 12-17 years old, we cannot them be exposed to this kinds of things through Facebook. If this continues and more spams keep being posted, we will have no choice but to ban Philippine users from using Facebook. We at Facebook will not tolerate outlandish behavior and indecency.

-Mark Zuckerberg – CEO of Facebook

The poor wording should automatically be a red flag that screams ‘Hoax’. Mark Zuckerberg made no such statement and the idea of banning an entire country for the recent spam attack is nothing short of ridiculous. Such a move would be unfair and ultimately harmful to the company’s ultimate goal of connecting the entire world.

Furthermore, there have been no such reports of such a statement from Zuckerberg on any of the reputable media sites nor on the official Facebook page.

So, if you see this message on your wall, do not repost it. Better yet, kindly inform the one who posted it that the message is merely a hoax and nothing else. It has been causing undue anxiety for some Filipino users and is earning them undue blame.

Meanwhile, we still have no information as to who the real culprits behind the attack were. All we know for now is that Facebook knows who they are and that legal action will be taken.
