A few Facecrooks readers have sent in scam reports on the posting shown below. Now, this isn’t a survey scam, rogue application, and it doesn’t contain a malware attack. It appears the sole purpose of the page is to acquire as many “likes” and “shares” as possible. So far it has been pretty successful. The page almost have 300,000 likes!
Clicking on the link shown above takes you to the following Facebook page:
Do you see anything suspicious at all about this “offer?” First off, if a company was launching a promotion regarding their new clothing line wouldn’t they at least tell you the name of the company? The fact that there is not company name or contact information should be a huge red flag. Secondly, there is no way for them to know where to ship your hat. I suppose they could send everyone a message via Facebook asking for their mailing address – Oh Snap! Perhaps the whole purpose of this scam is to get a huge list of people they can try to phish, scam or use in Facebook’s well known photo-tagging exploit. The opportunities for misuse are countless.
Another thing to consider is how many of the ones who “liked” and “shared” the page would willingly give up their physical address in hopes of receiving the hat? (it’s an ugly hat anyway, by the way!) If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times. If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is….especially on Facebook! Don’t fall for crap like this.
If the company conducting this promotion provides us with information that legitimizes the offer, then we will gladly remove this alert and issue an apology. 🙂
