The Sharejack

Scam Name: The Sharejack

Scam Signature Message(s): “10 Funny T-Shirt Fails” or something similar

Scam Link: same as message

Scam Type: Click Jacking – Trending: August 18, 2010

Why it’s a Scam:

1. You see the link “10 Funny T-Shirt Fails” or something similar.

2. You are asked to click a “Next” button. This “Next button is in reality a “Share” button, so when clicked you are posting the message to your wall using the Share function.

3. The last step and the whole point of the scam is to have you fill out a revenue generating survery for the scammers. The survey asks for personal information for a chance to win a prize of some kind. The survey then asks for your cell phone number (among other information.) If you read the fine print, you find that your cell phone will be charged $5.00 per week for a service called “The Awesome Test.”

How to Deal with the Scam:

Facebook has shut down the pages, but if you feel that you have been victimized by the scam, then do the following: 1) check to make sure any links posted to your newsfeed have been removed, 2) If you filled out a survey, then you should contact your cell carrier immediately to see if you have been charged the $5.00 scam.
