Facebook Might Start Warning You About How Much Time You’re Spending On Facebook

Facebook has come in for a ton of criticism over the past year-plus for the content it allows on its platform, including fake news, spam, inappropriate posts and much more. Now it seems like even the company itself knows it’s a problem; an engineer recently spotted an unreleased feature in Facebook’s code called “Your Time On Facebook” that would let you monitor how much time you spend on the site.

The tool would show you how much time you’ve spent on Facebook in the past seven days, and the average daily amount of time spent. It would even let you set a daily time limit for yourself and send you a notification when you’ve hit it. Facebook itself fessed up to creating the tool, though it didn’t say when or if it will be released.

“We’re always working on new ways to help make sure people’s time on Facebook is time well spent,” a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Of course, what’s notable about this feature is the fact it needs to exist at all. There aren’t many businesses out there that need to tell their customers sparingly use their services. It’s a sign of just how powerful — and potentially dangerous to our mental health — Facebook has become.
