This week, the whistleblower who has caused so much trouble for Facebook is set to testify before congress and ask lawmakers to regulate the social media giant. According to former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen’s prepared remarks, she plans to compare Facebook’s impact to that of the tobacco industry while “imploring” the government to rein it in.

Haugen has been on the warpath against Facebook for weeks, releasing documents to lawmakers and the press revealing that Facebook knows how much harm its platform can cause but hasn’t acted to stop it. According to her, the company has prioritized money over safety at every turn, and that’s why the government needs to step up.

“The company’s leadership knows ways to make Facebook and Instagram safer and won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their immense profits before people. Congressional action is needed,” she will say in her testimony. “As long as Facebook is operating in the dark, it is accountable to no one. And it will continue to make choices that go against the common good.”

This is one of the most high-profile examples yet of a former Facebook employee taking on the company — and unlike the others, Haugen has the documents to back it up. Only time will tell if this results in any meaningful change, but at least Facebook is being forced to publicly answer for many of its questionable practices.
