This past week Jimmy Kimmel announced a new holiday, “National UnFriend Day” to be observed on November 17, 2010. In his monologue, Kimmel pokes fun at the people that have 500+ Facebook “friends.” He reminisces of the days when the term “friend” actually had some meaning.
All joking aside, there is a real privacy risk to being “friends” on Facebook with people who are not actually your friends. There have been several stories of homes being burglarized by people who were Facebook “friends” with the victims. There is no way to know the character, vices and criminal history of everyone on your friends list, unless, of course, you actually only “friend” your real friends.
I say get a jump start on this much needed holiday and let the unfriending begin!
