New Facebook Stories Feature Lets You See Who’s “Stalking” You

Technology SecurityFacebook’s new Stories feature, which allows users to customize pictures and video with a variety of filters, drawings, stickers and more, has been derided as a Snapchat clone. However, there is another crucial similarity between the two social media tools that some users are beginning to notice: when you post a Facebook Story, you can see which of your friends have viewed it.

This is a huge change for Facebook, which has in the past declared that it will never let users see who has viewed their profiles. Facebook even calls out the issue in its customer-facing policies.

“Facebook doesn’t let people track who views their profile,” Facebook says in its own Help Center. “Third-party apps also can’t provide this functionality. If you come across an app that claims to offer this ability, please report the app.”

While technically true that someone who views a Facebook Story isn’t necessarily viewing that user’s profile, it still can give you a pretty good idea which of your friends are intensely interested in your everyday life. And it does open the door just a crack to the eventual possibility of knowing who does view your profile. So, if you’re a longtime Facebook stalker, just know that this new feature could seriously blow up your privacy.
