Facebook AI Sticker Tool Lets Users Generate Inappropriate Images

Last week, Facebook unveiled a new feature that allows users to generate stickers with artificial intelligence writing prompts. However, the tool has already gone completely off the rails, with users generating inappropriate images with prompts such as “child soldier,” “menacing kid with knife,” and more.

For its part, Facebook defended itself by noting that it works with experts to fine-tune these features as they roll out.

“In keeping with our commitment to responsible AI, we also stress test our products to improve safety performance and regularly collaborate with policymakers, experts in academia and civil society, and others in our industry to advance the responsible use of this technology,” Facebook wrote in its blog post announcing the feature. However, the company also noted that it’s rolling out this tool on a “step by step” basis because of the potential for it to be misused. And according to one expert, the company may have its work cut out to address these shortfalls.

“If part of Meta’s safeguards are blocking the term ‘naked’, but their AI is producing naked figures all the same, there are clearly lingering questions about just how effective these safeguards really are,” Internet researcher Tama Leaver wrote.

While this is ultimately a pretty silly issue, it’s also the perfect illustration of Facebook’s “move fast” philosophy that has caused so many problems for users in the past.
