Facebook Celebrates Data Privacy Day By Recapping Year Of Efforts

For years, Facebook has had a terrible (and some would say well-deserved) reputation for mishandling user data and privacy. However, the social media giant has stepped up its efforts to change public perception. That’s why, to mark Data Privacy Day, Facebook’s parent company Meta published a celebratory blog post last week touting all its privacy initiatives from the past year.

Among its accomplishments, Meta touted its first Privacy Progress Update published last spring, the fact it reduced its use of facial recognition technology, and that it strengthened encryption technology across the platform.

“This past year was an important one for privacy at Meta and for the people who use our apps and technologies,” Meta wrote in its blog post marking the occasion. “We’re committed to building on this foundation. From pushing for united privacy regulations across the industry to ensuring the integrity of international data flows, there’s always work to be done. Privacy is an integral part of everything we do here at Meta, and we understand that this commitment means continuously improving and focusing on this every day.”

However, many of the privacy victories that Meta shouted out are obvious solutions that experts have long called for. They’re certainly better than nothing, but they’re also just a start to achieving truly strong user privacy.
