Facebook Messenger Will Now Notify You If Someone Screenshots Your Disappearing Message

Last week, Meta finally rolled out end-to-end encryption for all Facebook Messenger users. The social media giant also introduced a host of new features, including a notification that will alert users if someone tries to sneakily screenshot one of their disappearing encrypted messages on Messenger.

Users will still be able to screenshot encrypted messages, but if they do, it will generate a small message to the user sharing the content that says “[name of message saver] took a screenshot.” According to Meta, this feature is intended to make encrypted messages feel even safer. However, while these features are rolling out to a broader range of users, the future is still murky for encryption across all of Meta’s platforms. Currently, the company promises to make it globally available sometime next year.

“We’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global rollout of end-to-end encryption by default across all our messaging services until sometime in 2023,” Meta head of safety Antigone Davis wrote last year. “As a company that connects billions of people around the world and has built industry-leading technology, we’re determined to protect people’s private communications and keep people safe online.”

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do if you have an encrypted message screenshotted. But at least Facebook is giving users greater transparency into their privacy, which is a step in the right direction.
