Facebook Rolls Out New Prayer Tool Amidst Privacy Concerns

This week, Facebook began rolling out a new tool that engages people of all faiths to share prayers on the platform. However, some faith leaders have expressed concern that the tool could be used to violate user privacy—or that these well-intentioned people may share more than they should.

The tool, which Facebook has been testing since December, allows users to call for prayers about personal challenges, illnesses, upcoming events, and more. Users who interact with these prayer posts can tap an “I prayed” button to show their support, along with the usual array of reactions. And while this is a legitimate way for Facebook to support faith communities, some leaders are worried about the privacy implications.

“Is it wise to post everything about everyone for the whole world to see?” Rev. Bob Stec said. “On a good day we would all be reflective and make wise choices. When we are under stress or distress or in a difficult moment, it’s almost too easy to reach out on Facebook to everyone.”

However, others in the faith community expressed optimism about this tool — as long as Facebook takes the steps necessary to protect users.

“As long as these companies initiate proper precautions and protocols to ensure the safety of religiously marginalized communities, people of faith should jump on board supporting this vital initiative,” said Adeel Zeb, a Muslim chaplain at The Claremont Colleges in California.

There’s no doubt that Facebook has good intentions by creating this feature. However, it’s also difficult to trust a company that has had so many data and privacy slip-ups in the past to take care of users’ most sensitive information.
