Former Facebook Employee Warns That The Platform Is “Poisoning” Young Users

Late last year, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen released a trove of internal documents revealing that the company knew its platforms can be harmful to young users, yet hadn’t taken steps to address the problem. What’s more, the social media giant was actively looking for every way possible to get children hooked on its services. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that yet another former Facebook employee emerged this week with a dire warning about the company’s practices, arguing that it is “purposely poisoning” the next generation of users.

“We talk about the political implications of these platforms and censorship, the economic implications of their anti-competitive behavior. But I don’t think it’s talked about enough when it comes to the social and cultural impacts of what these platforms are actually doing,” former Facebook analyst Kara Frederick said. “They are purposely poisoning the next generation with highly addictive content, and they know exactly what they’re doing.”

Thankfully, bipartisan efforts are currently underway in congress to rein in Facebook. However, Frederick argues that this is only the start, and that lawmakers and the public alike need to keep up this pressure on the company to guarantee lasting change.
