Political Candidate Falls For Common Facebook Phishing Scam

A conservative congressional candidate, Loren Culp, began claiming this week that Facebook is censoring him for his political views. After all, he says, he received an email from the social media giant saying that it was about to shut down his campaign page. However, Facebook says that it never sent any such email. That means it’s likely that Culp fell for a phishing scam that’s all too common on the platform.

This week, Culp said that he was being “de-platformed for zero reason” and shared an email purporting to be from Facebook. However, the email was full of grammatical errors and included a suspicious link for the Culp campaign to appeal its supposed suspension. However, despite the obvious signs of a scam, the campaign is maintaining that it actually could’ve been from Facebook.

“The possible fake email in question passed all of our security measures and spam blockers and hit our account Monday—this is why the email was taken seriously.  We have NOT received any clarification from Facebook on whether it was a scam—they did not respond to our inquiry,” said Chris Gergen, Culp’s campaign manager.

Unfortunately, scammers often impersonate Facebook because they understand many users will have this reaction. If you ever get an email from Facebook of any kind, it’s a good idea to be suspicious — especially if it has obvious red flags like this one did.
