Study: Many Americans Think Facebook Is Unethical

Facebook has a deservedly negative reputation when it comes to user privacy. However, as a recent study from nonprofit group JUST Capital shows, it goes beyond even that. The research, which asked people about their perceptions of 1,000 of the nation’s most profitable companies, found that Americans think tech companies prioritize ethics above all other industries. Facebook, however, was a major exception.

The difference between Facebook’s rankings and other major tech firms like Microsoft and Apple are quite dramatic. In fact, the majority of the top ten are related to tech.

“The list tends to have tech and tech-related companies at the top because the issue people tell us is most important is how you treat your workforce,” Alison Omens of JUST Capital told CNN Business. “You see companies that are technology, and technology-adjacent, pay their employees above a living wage and give them opportunities for career advancement.

“Despite tying for first in worker pay and coming in eighth in other employee categories, Facebook ranked 149th overall. It also ranked 915th when it comes to treatment of its customers. That is a direct result of the social media giant’s many privacy failings, and its perceived dishonesty.

Of course, Facebook’s business is fine for now. But it’s not good for the long-term health of the platform to be thought of so poorly by the people who use it.
